Atlanta Highway Breakdown Safety Guide

Breaking down inside the Perimeter is different from breaking down on it. This guide covers the practical decisions in each case.

The downtown connector (I-75/I-85)

The shared stretch through downtown carries enormous volume with limited shoulder. Traffic is often slow enough to be survivable but dense enough that no one can move over for you. Exits come frequently — use one if the car will still roll. Sitting on that shoulder for an extended period is a poor position to be in.

I-285 (the Perimeter)

Higher speeds, heavy truck traffic and long gaps between exits on some sections. Shoulders are generally wider than downtown, but speed differential makes them more dangerous. Get as far right as possible, past the rumble strip if there's room, and stay aware of traffic behind you.

I-20 east and west

Mixed conditions with construction that shifts over time. Temporary concrete barriers can eliminate the shoulder entirely for a stretch. If you're in a barrier section with nowhere to pull off, call 911 — that is a lane-blocking emergency, not a routine tow call.

Breaking down at night

• Leave headlights and hazards on so your position is readable.
• Turn on the interior dome light so passing drivers can see the car is occupied.
• Keep doors locked while you wait.
• Share your location with someone by text.
• Get an estimated arrival window when you call, and call back if the situation changes.

Immediate danger, injuries or a blocked travel lane means 911 first. A towing company is not an emergency service.

What to keep in the car

• A phone charger or battery pack — everything depends on a working phone.
• A flashlight that isn't your phone's.
• Water, and a warm layer regardless of season.
• A reflective vest if you ever expect to get out on a shoulder.
• A tire pressure gauge, and knowledge of whether you actually have a spare.
