Car Won't Start? Battery vs. Starter Warning Signs

The sound your car makes when it won't start tells you most of what you need to know.

Stranded Right Now?

Tell us what happened and where you are. We'll take it from there.

Three different failures feel identical from the driver's seat: a dead battery, a bad starter and a failing alternator. The symptoms separate them.

Signs it's the battery

  • Slow, labored cranking that gets slower with each attempt.
  • Dash lights dim dramatically or die when you turn the key.
  • Nothing at all — no lights, no chime, no click.
  • It happened after lights were left on, or after the car sat for weeks.
  • A jump start gets it running immediately.

Signs it's the starter

  • A single loud click, then silence, while the dash lights stay bright.
  • Normal electrical behavior — radio, lights and windows all work fine.
  • A jump start makes no difference.
  • An occasional grinding or whirring instead of cranking.

Signs it's the alternator

The alternator recharges the battery while you drive. When it fails, the car often runs for a while and then dies — sometimes on the road. Watch for a battery warning light while driving, headlights that dim at idle and brighten when you rev, and a battery that goes flat again a day after a jump.

Atlanta heat shortens battery life

Heat, not cold, does most of the damage to a battery. Georgia summers accelerate internal corrosion and fluid loss; the failure just tends to show up later, on the first cold morning when the battery has no reserve left. If your car has been cranking slowly, get the battery and charging system tested before it strands you.

A jump that works but doesn't hold is information, not a fix. Something is draining or failing to charge.

If your car won't start anywhere in the Atlanta area, we can attempt a jump start and, if it won't stay running, tow it to a shop. Call (404) 915-3463.
